PLASTIC WASTE POLLUTION – WHAT IS THE SOLUTION ?

PLASTIC WASTE POLLUTION – WHAT IS THE SOLUTION ?

Based on the premise that the Quran and Sunnat give solutions to all problems let us try to solve the seemingly intractable problem of plastic waste pollution.

The Quran says “O you who believe, make not unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you. But commit no excess for Allah loves not those given to excess.”

Islam advocates the middle path. Just as it condemns profligacy and extravagance, it also discourages abstinence from worldly matters. In effect Islam is against all kinds of extremism.

Now let us apply this principle to the movement against plastics. No doubt the manufacture and widespread use of plastics has caused innumerable problems. Our drainage systems, our water courses are being clogged with wrappers, shopping bags and what not. But is the answer an outright ban on them?

Everyone knows that plastics have made life cheaper and simpler. To put an outright ban on them is not only impossible but would be counter productive as well. The answer to plastic pollution may be found in research, reuse and recycling.

Certainly, recycling of plastic waste was started right from the beginning, however with the passage of time a plethora of plastic waste came up which could not be easily recycled.

This problem was solved on 14th January 2018 at an open exhibition held at the Karachi Press Club where each and every kind of hitherto non recyclable plastic waste like metallic film (wrappers in common parlance) and Thermopole waste were shown reused in a brand new technology called Chandi Technology. Chandi Technology is comparable to the mobile technology which allows the user access to various services by the mere pressing of different buttons. However, the functions and services of the Chandi Technology are many more and all encompassing i.e modular. A Chandi building can be transformed into a water reservoir, bed tables chairs and vice versa in no time. Now we can think in terms of putting up high tech mobile shops, mobile universities, mobile factories etc, overnight!

The entire exercise of producing and marketing of this technology will result in all kinds of plastic waste being carefully collected and reused as essential raw material for quality goods. This will ensure that non bio degradable waste is: a) not burnt b) nor thrown into drains and water courses. Ideally, this will return mother earth to its pristine state.

The Chandi Technology is in fact a gift of the almighty for the entire world just as he gifted the mobile phone and many other inventions to us. In fact every invention is a testimony to the living presence of the Almighty who trains his beings into making the most fascinating products that people in the past could only dream of.

In olden times the Almighty used to show his presence through miracles sent to prophets. However, since no prophet is to come after the Holy Prophet Muhammad, the Almighty it seems is sending all kinds of miracles and signs through modern day discoveries and innovations.

SAVE THE WORLD with CHANDI TECHNOLOGY

SAVE THE WORLD with CHANDI TECHNOLOGY

Recently, Gul Bahao, in collaboration with the Dept. of Developmental Studies NED University held a one day event “Saving the World with Chandi Technology at Karachi Press Club.” – an exhibition of the organizations research products made from waste material. The exhibition was jointly sponsored by well known philanthropist Sardar Yasin Malik,Hamdard Foundation, and well known t.v artist Sarwat Gillani.A detailed discussion with the CEO of Gul Bahao, Nargis Latif, gave deep insights into its program which is bent upon “Turning Garbage into Gold”.

These days the organization is increasingly talking about a “new technology” i.e prefabricated, modular blocks which will be as “sensational as the mobile phone …We started with the goal of cleaning up Karachi through experimenting and recycling and ended up with commercially viable products, very useful for people”, claims Nargis Latif.

Cynicism aside, credit must be given to the organization for putting up a solid room, a 10×40 feet swimming pool and a temporary wall/screen in just a few hours in the backyard of the KPC. The place wore a festive look with young girls and boys moving around trying to explain to visitors what the exhibition was all about. Patriotic songs were being played on the sound system. The best part of the exhibition was the bright sunshine which made everything glitter. What gave the event a sanctified look were three cut outs of trees along with their branches bearing translations of the Holy Quran in English, Urdu and Sindhi. These were placed at the entrance of the club.

Here it may be mentioned that Karachi, one of the biggest metropolises of the world is also known for the mountains of garbage lying all around. The head of Gul Bahao maintains that by recycling all kinds of plastic waste, her organization has in effect solved a world wide problem of environment pollution.

According to Nargis, shopping bags wrappers and thermopole are the biggest culprits in waste management. These are either burnt leading to high atmospheric temperatures/pollution, allowed to clog the drainage system or pollute water courses. Gul Bahao has spent millions of rupees and spent 24 years conducting experiments to produce useful goods from waste material separated at source. Once these innovations enter the market and are reproduced en masse, environmental pollution will be controlled and the worlds natural environment restored, or so claims the organizational head.

According to Nargis, the Chandi Technology will charge up the business environment, due to its usefulness. Explaining the technology, Nargis said it comprises of modular blocks and panels made from metallic film and thermopole waste. Pointing to the items on display, Nargis said entire rooms, warehouses, water reservoirs can be installed in a matter of just a few hours and removed just as quickly. This aspect she said is especially useful in rented premises or where ever mobile pre-fabricated structures are required. These structures are also inter convertible
For example a classroom can be converted into a ware house or shop or a water reservoir or even a bed and vice versa. What is more, the roof of a structure can be converted into furniture, partitions, walls etc.

Pointing to what looked like a partition wall, Gul Bahao’s spokesman Mohammad Hannan, said, “This is the latest addition to our stock of innovations. This is my own personal invention-what we refer to as thermopole panel. Now we are looking into making light weight structures”, he said
Talking about the advantages of this modern day technology, Nargis mentioned its durability and longevity due to its plastic nature and insulation. Cool in summer, warm in winter (this quality of the Chandi Ghar especially appealed to the visitors), strong against the elements, huge block size hence plenty of space for inbuilt cupboards, extend able in all four directions due to sheer strength of the columns, custom made etc etc.

According to Arsalaan, the event manager “More than 150 houses have been installed all over Pakistan during the last 15 years or so. One structure was put up 9 years ago, another 5 years ago, still another 3 years ago which have passed the test of time. Our work is being acclaimed on websites all over the world”.

When asked “If this technology is so good, why has it not become common”, pat came the answer “People are hide bound. They refuse to accept new ideas. When the tried and tested CNG was first introduced in Pakistan, no one was bothered for years. People used to say it would destroy the engines (of the vehicles). I dont need to tell you how successful it is now”. To the question what are the future prospects and programs of the organization, the CEO of Gul Bahao replied, “The ball is in the court of our businessmen and entrepreneurs. Our work was to experiment and innovate. We have done our bit”.

Chandi Technology set to change the world

Chandi Ghar Letter head

It could be called a mini exhibition in a mega event. The showcasing of the Chandi Technology at the science exhibition held at the Dawood Public School. The venue was just the right one to display a new invention!. There were life size murals describing the lives and works of well known inventors. The mobile message from Gul Bahao, the parent organization of Chandi Technology ran “Chandi Technology – Karachi’s Gift to the world!, all set to change the world”. Truly the Chandi technology has caught the imagination of people living in different parts of the world. New York, Holland, Delhi, South Korea, Italy, France, parts of the Middle East etc, thanks to CNN, Voice of America, Al Jazeera etc. Pakistans social media is also chatting about this innovation.

As one entered the school premises, one had to go through a make believe tunnel. Immediately after in the brilliant sunshine, amidst picturesque surroundings stood the Chandi Ghar with a water reservoir right in front. The Chandi Ghar as the name suggests was doing full justice to its name. Its sheer beauty was attracting thousands of people on a daily basis. The school records showed that in the last 3 days more than 50,000 (fifty thousand) youngsters attended the exhibition. This excluded the parents and teachers who attended it.

Many of the visitors who came to the Chandi Ghar came with the preconceived notion that the Chandi Ghar being an offshoot of the Gul Bahao waste managment program must be made up of garbage. People young and old kept congratulating the CEO of Gul Bahao trying ways of recycling the city’s garbage. On the other hand, the staff of Gul Bahao was at great pains to explain to the people that in fact a new technology, first time in the world has come up during the last 12 years or so. They kept insisting that the raw material used in the Chandi Technolgy is so clean that it can be used in places of worship. That it is metalized film which though they are factory leftovers is sterile material which can be called virgin material.

Gul Bahao’s spokesman Mohammad Hannan explained to the groups of visitors that kept coming in that the longevity of the Chandi Ghar can be gauged from the fact some of the structures put up in various parts of Pakistan are there since the last several years. One such Chandi Ghar at Ibrahim Haideri has been there since the last 10 years, according to him. What is more, these structures have proved themselves against heavy storms in several places.

Pointing to the photographic mounts displayed on the tables (even these were made up of the Chandi Technology) Mohammad Hannan claimed that 150 structures using this technology have been put up all over Pakistan. These include a marriage hall, lecture hall, single rooms, ware house, water reservoir, rest house etc.

Here it may be added that only a short while ago, during the 3 weeks leading upto the Eidul Azha , a Chandi Hall was put up for exhibition at the Cattle Mandi on Superhighway. Throughout that time the Chandi Hall exuded a gold like effect during the night, while its silver effect shimmered in the day time, captivating the imagination of thousands of people thronging the streets of the Mandi.

BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR 14TH AUGUST !

BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR 14TH AUGUST !

Yesterday, a group of more than 40 university going  students from  a program “Yeh Hai Karachi” sponsored by an NGO, “Karachi Youth Initiative”, came to visit Gul Bahao’s research center in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Nargis Latif  (CEO of Gul Bahao), addressing the youth, said that with only a few days left for independence day, her organization has a pleasant surprise for the whole of Pakistan. That, she said is the Chandi Technology which, has taken more than 2 decades to evolve with an expenditure running into millions of rupees and the involvement of thousands of people living in Karachi.

The Gul Bahao staff then proceeded to show every aspect of the Chandi Technology, from the 14 feet high hall built 4 years ago to the under construction 10’x12′ Chandi Room, the 5’x6′ water pond, masterbed, tables and chairs all made from clean, plastic waste supplied by factories.

They took pains to explain that all these items are interchangeable, that the panel used in the roof of the Chandi Ghar can be changed into a light weight table, while the heavy weight blocks used in the columns can be used for making a water reservoir in the shortest possible time. Beautiful looking mounted photographs of different aspects and locations of the Chandi Technology were also on display, on the occasion.

Nargis Latif the founder and chairperson requested the participants of the workshop to raise their hands in prayer, reciting the translation of Sura Fateha in Urdu. Nargis begged the almighty to bless this innovation which according to her is truly a “Sign of God”. Nargis appealed to the students to take up the Chandi Technology, to produce it, market it, to make the media more aware about it. “Just as the steam engine, brought about a technological revolution in the west, so too the Chandi Technology when fully applied will God willing, change the face of Pakistan”, she exhorted.

The CEO of the Chandi Technology said the immediate implementation of the Chandi Technology will be in the form of Rozgar La Mehdood i.e unlimited opportunities for entrepreneurs and shelter for the shelter less and Subsidized Housing for the rural poor.  The students who participated in the one day workshop hailed from different universities, with academic backgrounds as varied as Business Administration, Biology, Mass Communications, Biology etc. However all of them came armed with Digital Cameras to take shots of a technology which is struggling to make a place for it self in the global village.
